Street operations and maintenance staff within the Transportation Division work daily to maintain 155 miles of arterial, collector and local streets within the Redmond Urban Growth Boundary.
Each year Street Operations staff spends considerable time on pavement maintenance by applying treatments such as asphalt overlays, crack sealant and pothole repair. In spring staff conduct the Pavement Overlay Project. Each section of pavement throughout the City is compared to other pavement sections in the City using a computer software program. The City’s goal is to resurface streets every 7-8 years.
Work for the current year is expected to be complete in May and includes a two-inch deep asphalt overlay to preserve and restore the pavement.
As winter approaches the Transportation Division monitors weather reports and moves to a winter work schedule as part of the Snow and Ice Plan. Because emergency routes need to be kept open for the hospital, fire and police, these roads take priority for snow removal and sanding. Following in priority are the arterials and major collectors, minor collectors, residential through streets, and finally, cul-de-sacs.
Nine Transportation Division employees are responsible for numerous activities that promote safe use of streets and beautification of the City. Other maintenance activities which you will see going on at various times throughout the year include:
• Right-of-way maintenance
vegetation control, tree trimming,
weed abatement, curb, shoulders,
downtown lighting and ditches
• Downtown area sidewalks related
to street tree maintenance and
appurtenances
• Emergency traffic control
• Street sweeping
performed daily, throughout
the year to mitigate debris from
storm drains
• Coordinate installation of residential lighting
• Downtown festivities
hang banners (seasonally), set up traffic
control for parades, Sunfest, Farmers Market
• City beautification and litter clean-up
• Coordinate Adopt-a-Street program
• Coordinate drainage mitigation projects
culverts, curb and gutter
• Install or construct traffic calming devices and signage
• Bridge and guard rail maintenance
The Streets Operations staff uses a fleet of vehicles to conduct their daily work. This fleet as well as all other Public Works, Police, Fire, and other City vehicles are kept in good working order by four mechanics specially trained and certified to work on large trucks and emergency vehicles. In addition to keeping the 200 rolling stock of vehicles working, they repair and maintain 150 small engine equipment items (generators, lawn mowers, etc.)
