One thing that we Americans have in common is that we move often. We move for work, for school and to help other family members meet their needs. At least that is my story, and in the 12 years that I have lived here, I have seen many of you making similar decisions.

I moved to Redmond in 1997 because I had fallen in love with a most honest and compatible man, and he lived in Redmond.  I packed up my belongings and made a commitment to my new partner. I didn’t realize it then, but I was also making a commitment to my new community.

My husband Ron and I bought a 60-year-old house situated on a huge expanse of lawn on Dogwood Avenue. Here we could pursue our individual interests. Ron could remodel the little house, room by room, and I could plant and tend many of the trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables that I had never had time for.  Here we were surrounded by great skiing terrain, wonderful biking and hiking trails, and a mild and generous climate that invited us outside.

We found in Redmond a supportive work environment. Ron had his own upholstery shop, while I was able to continue my career as a physical therapist specializing in geriatric clients at the Redmond Health Care Center. We were amazed by all the new construction of buildings and businesses. We shared our excitement with the many new and interesting people that were discovering and moving to Central Oregon.

We realized that we had received so much from our community and that it was time to make an effort to give back in a service capacity. I say ‘we’ because I could not be a committed city councilor without the encouragement and commitment of my husband. Thanks to wonderful support from the community, I won a seat on the city council in 2008.

As I begin my four-year term of service, I am asking the citizens of Redmond to take the time to communicate their interests and concerns with me. I did not make this commitment and take on this responsibility to boost my resume nor my ego. I am here only to do the right thing for the community in whatever way possible. I want to be a voice for those of you who do not attend council meetings and who are not sure that anyone is listening at city hall.

I have a dedicated phone number 541-604-5401, and I really want to hear your point of view. I have a website, www.ShirleeEvans.com, where you can meet my husband, our dog and view the solar photovoltaic panels on our garage roof.   I am strongly supportive of parks, trails, and healthy out-of-door activities for youth and adults. I will post articles on community topics that I am involved with. I invite you to review these articles and to add your own comments and concerns.

I think that respectful discussion is the most direct avenue for us to create a caring and involved community. That is certainly the community that I want to belong to, and I trust that you feel the same. Welcome to Redmond.
