The expansion of Centennial Park comprises the addition of a one-acre parcel to the west of the current park. This will connect the new City Hall with the existing Centennial Park and the Downtown Commercial Business District.
The expansion has been a part of the City’s overall vision since 2008 when the existing Centennial Park was first initiated. The expansion is a priority for both the City and broader community.
The Downtown Urban Renewal District Plan identified a critical shortage of parks and open space throughout the Plan area. While the 2010 opening of Centennial Park provided a much-needed park and public plaza in the downtown core, the need for more parks and open space remained.
The Plan notes the expansion of Centennial Park will help activate surrounding properties by attracting urban living via condos and townhomes, new retail, additional entertainment opportunities, restaurants, and other active uses that will benefit from increased foot traffic generated by a quality park.
In 2016, a nine-member citizen task force was appointed to lead a public outreach and community participation effort to assist in the design of the park expansion. The task force members represent specific constituencies within the community. Staff along with a contracted landscape architecture contractor, Szabo Landscape Architecture, led the task force through a design process that included multiple public forums to solicit community input into the final park design.
In October 2018, Kirby Nagelhout Construction was awarded the contract for the Expansion project, with construction scheduled to begin in Spring 2019.
